What is Breast Reduction?
Breast reduction is a cosmetic procedure performed to reduce the size and weight of overly large breasts, creating more proportioned and aesthetically pleasing breast contours. Through the removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and lax skin, the breasts can become smaller, lighter, firmer, and more symmetrical.
We understand that no two bodies are the same. Because of this, our board-certified plastic surgeons employ an individualized approach, tailoring your breast reduction procedure to your individual aesthetic and functional goals.

Incision Patterns
This technique is known as the “short scar breast reduction” technique or the “lollipop” incision due to its shape. An incision is created around the areola, along with a second incision vertically down to the breast crease.
Also known as the “inverted T” incision, this technique involves the creation of three separate incisions. These include a circular incision around the areola, a certain incision down to the breast crease, and a horizontal incision across the breast crease. This technique is often used to remove a large amount of breast tissue.
Some patients may benefit from a liposuction-assisted technique. This breast reduction procedure may be performed entirely with liposuction or in conjunction with an incision pattern.
What to Expect
The first step toward this procedure is a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. This meeting is the best time to discuss your aesthetic and functional concerns and your medical history, as well as ask any questions you may have.
To prepare for your breast reduction procedure, you may need to undergo a baseline mammogram to provide your surgeon with a point of reference that they can use to detect any abnormalities in the future. You may also be asked to stop or adjust certain medications and stop smoking. Our team will provide you with detailed instructions regarding how to best prepare for your breast reduction surgery.
The breast reduction procedure is an outpatient procedure either in an ambulatory surgical center or in the comforts of our very own specialized procedure rooms. There are a variety of incision patterns that can be used to achieve breast reduction. Our surgeons must consider numerous factors, such as the size of your breasts, the degree of breast sagging, the elasticity of breast skin, and more, to determine the best surgical approach. Ultimately, the incision pattern that is best for you will be discussed during your consultation.
Immediately following breast reduction surgery, you will be brought to a recovery room, where you will be monitored before returning home. A friend or family member will have to drive you home following surgery and should stay with you for the first night after recovery. Some patients may have draining tubes inserted into the treatment area to drain away excess fluid. Pain medication will be prescribed to control any discomfort.
While rest is important during healing, you should take light walks as soon as you can to ensure proper blood flow. Most patients can return to light work within 2 weeks; however, stretching, lifting, bending, and exercising should be avoided until your surgeon says it is safe to resume. Our team will schedule your post-operative appointments with you to allow your surgeon to monitor your healing progress.
What Our Patients Say
Read MoreDoes Breast Reduction Surgery Decrease Nipple Sensitivity?
Some patients who are considering breast reduction surgery are concerned about reduced nipple sensitivity. While some women actually feel an increased sensation, others will experience a decrease in feeling. If you are concerned about this, let your surgeon know, as we can utilize surgical methods that help preserve as much nipple sensitivity as possible.
Are Breast Reduction Results Permanent?
While our plastic surgeons work to provide patients with an outcome that they can be very happy with, keep in mind that weight changes and pregnancy can negatively impact the result of this procedure. The effects of aging and gravity can also affect the outcome of this procedure over time. We recommend that you maintain a healthy lifestyle with a proper diet and exercise regimen in order to get the most out of this surgery.
