What Is a Labiaplasty?

If you’re on a journey to improve your self-confidence, you may have heard about labiaplasty to address concerns related to excess skin around the female genitals. What is a labiaplasty? How does it work, and who is a good candidate for this procedure?

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the labia to address cosmetic or functional concerns. A physician can help evaluate whether a labiaplasty is the best approach for your situation.

In this article, we’ll explore labiaplasty techniques, what to expect during and after labia reduction surgery, and more, so you can feel prepared and confident in your decision.

At Defyne, our board-certified plastic surgeons can walk you through a personalized plan to achieve your goals, including labiaplasty.

Why Patients Consider Labiaplasty

The skin folds around the vagina, called the labia minora, can vary widely in size from person to person. While there is no “typical” appearance of the labia minora, some women have excess skin and/or asymmetry in this area. This can be genetic, the result of pregnancy or childbirth, or related to aging.

When there is excess skin of the labia minora, it can cause discomfort during exercise, certain physical activities, or sex when it rubs, gets pinched, caught, or twisted.

While labiaplasty can be medically relevant to treating discomfort or congenital concerns, it can also be purely elective to address emotional and aesthetic issues. In the United States, more than 18,000 women choose this procedure each year.

How Labiaplasty Surgery Works

The first step of labiaplasty surgery is a consultation with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

In addition to learning about your medical history and assessing whether you are a good candidate for the procedure, the surgeon will ask questions to understand your goals. They will also answer questions you may have about the procedure, outcomes, and risks involved.

Before the procedure, you may be asked to stop or adjust certain medications and to stop smoking if you are a smoker.

During the procedure, pain relief is provided with general or local anesthesia, sometimes with sedation, depending on the patient, surgeon, and treatment plan.

Excess tissue is carefully removed to refine symmetry and size, and absorbable sutures are placed to close the incisions. This is an outpatient procedure, so you’ll go home to recover the same day.

Common Surgical Techniques for Labiaplasty

There are two techniques that can be used for labiaplasty surgery:

  • Trim technique: Removes tissue along the labial edge with a scalpel or scissors; may be appropriate when the edge itself is part of the patient’s concern.
  • Wedge technique: Removes a wedge-shaped section on one or both sides of the labia minora while preserving more of the natural labial edge; may be appropriate for individuals who have tissue extending beyond the labia majora or a more triangular labia.

Technique selection depends on anatomy, goals, and the surgeon’s expertise.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

Adults who are in good overall health, are non-smokers, and have realistic expectations and clear functional or appearance-related goals may be appropriate candidates for labiaplasty. It is often recommended to wait after pregnancy or childbirth, as changes can continue to evolve during these events.

Many patients who have finished having children choose to combine labiaplasty with a mommy makeover.

Your surgeon will screen for active infection, pregnancy considerations, smoking or nicotine use, body dysmorphic disorder, and mental health concerns when indicated.

It’s also important not to pursue surgery because of pressure from a partner or unrealistic standards. Your surgeon can help walk you through realistic changes from the procedure.

Recovery: What to Expect After Labia Reduction Surgery

After labiaplasty, pain medication and intermittent ice to the area helps with discomfort. You will need to keep the area clean and dry. At first, there may be some swelling, bruising, soreness, spotting, and temporary sensitivity or numbness.

Initial downtime is around one week to rest and recover, with light activity resuming gradually after that. Sex, tampons, cycling, running, and strenuous exercise should be avoided until your doctor clears you, typically around 4-6 weeks.

Final results are not immediate; swelling may take up to six months to fully resolve, and the final shape may take longer to settle. Results are permanent. Studies show that more than 90% of women report they are satisfied with the outcome of their labiaplasty.

Risks of Labiaplasty

Like any surgery, labiaplasty carries risk for side effects like bleeding, hematoma (bruising), and infection. Other complications include:

  • Scarring
  • Post-operative asymmetry (removal of too little or too much tissue)
  • A need for revision surgery
  • Discomfort or lack of sensation during intercourse

Choosing a highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon can help reduce the risk of surgical complications.

Benefits of Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty may offer both functional and confidence-related benefits for the right candidate. By reducing or reshaping excess labial tissue, the procedure can help minimize irritation, tugging, twisting, or pinching that may occur during exercise, intercourse, or when wearing fitted clothing.

Some patients also find that addressing asymmetry or excess tissue helps them feel more comfortable in their bodies and more confident in intimate or active settings.
