Does a Breast Reduction Include a Lift?

If you have been exploring the possibility of a breast reduction, you may also be naturally wondering if a breast reduction includes a breast lift. Understanding each procedure, how they differ, and which is appropriate for you can feel complicated.

In simple terms, a breast reduction typically creates a lifting effect because the surgeon removes excess tissue and skin, reshapes the remaining breast, and repositions the nipple when needed. That does not necessarily mean a separate breast lift procedure is being performed. The right plan depends on your anatomy and goals and should be developed with a board-certified plastic surgeon.

If you would like to understand what is right for your body, you can book a personalized breast reduction consultation with Defyne today.

What Happens During Breast Reduction?

A breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is a plastic surgery procedure that removes excessive fat, glandular tissue, and skin to reduce breast size and weight, which can also relieve strain.

This procedure is considered by people wanting to address common concerns related to overly large breasts, such as neck, back, and shoulder discomfort, bra-strap grooves from suspending excess weight, skin irritation, activity limitations, and difficulty finding comfortable clothing.

During breast reduction surgery, reshaping remaining breast tissue is sometimes needed. In cases where there is drooping, loss of firmness, and/or low-hanging areolas, combining a breast reduction with a breast lift can help create a more desirable breast shape.

Breast Reduction vs. Breast Lift: Where They Overlap

Understandably, extra breast tissue leads to sagging and can distort the shape of the breasts. One way that a breast reduction and breast lift are similar is that they both can address this concern.

Breast reduction can decrease sagging because the surgeon removes excess tissue and skin, reshapes the remaining breast, and often repositions the nipple-areola complex. For some patients, those lifting steps are sufficient without a separately planned breast lift.

Breast lifts also decrease sagging and improve the position of the nipples as well as overall breast shape. The primary difference between the two is that a lift changes position and shape, while a reduction changes size, weight, shape, and position.

When a Standalone Lift May Be Appropriate

If there are not symptoms related to large breasts and breast heaviness, a breast reduction may not be necessary. When the main concern is drooping breasts and nipples or loss of shape, a breast lift surgery may be the more appropriate choice. Pregnancy, weight fluctuations, and aging can all contribute to breast sagging.

Although it does not substantially reduce breast size, a breast lift may help breasts look smaller or firmer because it removes excess skin and reshapes tissue. Research shows that on average, women experience a reduction of one cup size after a breast lift.

When a Breast Lift and Reduction is the Better Fit

For many patients, the best approach is not strictly a breast reduction or a breast lift, but a surgical plan that combines the goals of both. Combining a reduction and lift may be recommended when you want smaller, lighter breasts and have concerns such as sagging, low nipple position, stretched skin, or uneven breast shape.

In many cases, the breast reduction surgery itself can include lifting and reshaping steps, rather than an additional procedure: excess tissue is removed, the remaining breast tissue is reshaped, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned to better match the new breast size and contour.

Breast Reduction and Lift Recovery Time

Your surgeon will walk you through the recovery process and what precautions are needed to avoid complications. After the surgery, swelling, bruising, soreness, and sensation changes are normal. A supportive surgical bra is commonly recommended during breast reduction and lift recovery to reduce swelling and support healing tissue. Patients are also instructed to limit lifting and exercise temporarily.

Total breast reduction lift surgery recovery time depends on your surgical plan and your surgeon’s instructions. Initial downtime is usually between 2-3 weeks, with full recovery taking between 3-6 months. Further scar maturation and settling of results may continue for up to one year. Depending on the incision patterns used, some scars may remain visible; others will be less noticeable.

Defyne’s Approach: Customization, Technique, and Technology

At Defyne Plastic Surgery, treatment begins with an individualized plan based on breast size, degree of sagging, skin elasticity, and your aesthetic and functional goals. Your surgeon will recommend the reduction and lifting techniques best suited to your anatomy.

This includes choice of incision pattern and whether any other procedures should be considered. For example, breast reduction and lift procedures are sometimes performed as part of a mommy makeover alongside a tummy tuck.

Defyne also offers two breast lift options: traditional breast lift surgery and the minimally invasive True Form Breast Lift, which uses radiofrequency skin tightening, micro-coring, and fat transfer. A traditional lift can be combined with breast reduction when appropriate. Your surgeon can explain which approach best fits your needs and goals.
