Tired of Treating Migraines Instead of Solving Them for Good?

For many people, migraine treatment becomes an endless cycle of prescriptions, injections, and trial-and-error solutions that never fully deliver. While these options may provide temporary relief, they often fail to address the underlying cause. When migraines are triggered by irritated or compressed nerves, lasting relief may require a more targeted, corrective approach.

At Defyne Plastic Surgery, we specialize in migraine surgery designed to provide long-term relief for patients with chronic, treatment-resistant migraines. Contact us today to schedule your consultation appointment.

What is Migraine Surgery?

Those who suffer from migraine headaches know just how debilitating they can be. Migraines often cause severe, throbbing, or pulsing pain and may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and heightened sensitivity to light and sound. Some migraine attacks last only a few hours, while others persist for days, with pain intense enough to interfere with work, relationships, and everyday life.

For patients who have tried medications and other non-surgical treatments without lasting relief, migraine surgery at Defyne Plastic Surgery may be an effective option. Our board-certified surgeons focus on surgically releasing specific nerve trigger sites that may be contributing to migraine pain, with the goal of reducing the frequency and intensity of migraine episodes in appropriately selected patients.

What to Expect

Prepare icon
Prepare

Your journey begins with a consultation with one of our board-certified plastic surgeons. During this appointment, you can discuss your migraine history, concerns, and desired outcomes. If migraine surgery is deemed appropriate, you may be asked to adjust certain medications, undergo lab tests or evaluations, and stop smoking. Your surgeon will provide detailed instructions to help you prepare for a safe and effective procedure.
To prepare for your treatment, you may be asked to avoid sun-tanning or self-tanners for four weeks prior. Depending on the treatment area, excess hair may need to be shaved the night before. Patients with a history of herpes or cold sores may require an antiviral prescription before treatment. Our clinical team will provide detailed instructions to ensure you are fully prepared.

During Your Procedure

Once migraine trigger points—areas where nerves in the face and head are irritated or compressed—are identified, our surgeons can work to reduce pain. This may involve surgically releasing surrounding tissue or otherwise addressing the nerve to block pain signals. Surgical techniques are tailored to each patient to achieve the best possible outcome.

Migraine surgery typically takes about one hour and is performed under general anesthesia. Incisions are created and hidden in the scalp or upper eyelid, so scarring is nearly imperceptible.

Downtime & Recovery

Recovery time varies depending on the procedure performed. Most patients experience mild bruising and swelling that resolve within weeks. Many can return to normal activities within 3 to 5 days. Your surgeon will provide specific aftercare instructions to support a smooth and comfortable recovery.

Techniques

Migraines can result from compressed nerves near tissues or muscles. At Defyne Plastic Surgery, our experienced surgeons offer minimally invasive procedures tailored to the location of your personal migraine triggers. Techniques may include:

M.I.S.O.N.

Minimally invasive supra-orbital nerve (M.I.S.O.N) decompression is a minimally invasive treatment for the reduction of migraine pain. While it is not a complete cure for migraines, it may offer a significant reduction in discomfort caused by migraines. During this procedure, the supraorbital nerve is decompressed, relieving pressure and improving migraine symptoms.

M.I.G.O.N.E

Minimally invasive greater occipital nerve entrapment (M.I.G.O.N.E) is a treatment for migraines triggered by occipital neuralgia. The main cause of occipital neuralgia is the entrapment of the occipital nerve within the surrounding muscle tissues. During this procedure, the tissue surrounding the occipital nerve is removed, creating more space so that it can function without pain.

Deviated Septum Surgery

Septoplasty, or the surgical correction of a deviated septum, can be an effective treatment for some migraines. When the nasal septum is deviated or bent, it may cause severe pressure on the nerves. Our plastic surgeons may suggest septoplasty to help straighten the cartilage and relieve the pressure.
