What is Breast Implant Revision?

While breast augmentation is often a highly satisfying cosmetic procedure, some women may not be pleased with the outcome of their augmentation for one reason or another. For these individuals, breast implant revision may be an effective option. This procedure is performed to adjust or correct the results of a previous breast augmentation surgery. Defyne is also pleased to offer our signature True Shape Breast Augmentation and True Form Breast Lift as minimally invasive options for breast implant revision.  At Defyne, our board-certified plastic surgeons create an individualized treatment plan to meet your needs and desires so that you can feel confident with your results.

Key benefits

  • Improved satisfaction with breast size
  • Enhancement of asymmetry or mispositioning
  • Correction of capsular contracture
  • Adjustment of implant rippling
  • Improvement of any other breast implant-related concerns

The Defyne Approach

At Defyne, we understand that every woman seeking breast implant revision will have a unique set of concerns and goals. Our plastic surgeons never employ a one-size-fits-all approach and instead create individual surgical plans to meet the needs of our patients.

What To Expect

Your first step toward improving the look and feel of your breasts is to schedule a consultation appointment. During this visit, you can discuss your breast implant concerns, medical history, and ultimate aesthetic goals. A personalized treatment plan will then be created to make your procedure goals a reality.

Prior to your procedure, you may be asked to alter or stop certain medications, as well as stop smoking. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with instructions on how to prepare for your breast implant revision procedure.

Breast implant revision surgery is performed under general anesthesia to ensure patient comfort and safety. The exact steps of your procedure will vary depending on your individual needs and goals. Once the original implant or implants have been removed, the pocket and capsule will be surgically fixed. New implants or fat transferred from another body part will be inserted to achieve the desired breast shape, feel, and appearance. Our surgeons pride themselves on using only the most updated and proven surgical techniques and technologies to provide you with natural-looking results.

Following breast implant revision, swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort may be experienced for a few days. Individuals who receive a replacement implant will be instructed to wear a special compression bra to reduce swelling and support their new breast contour. Your surgeon will provide you with specific instructions regarding aftercare, including when you can return to exercise, to ensure proper healing. Most patients can expect to rest and take it easy for one week following this procedure.

Every Body is Different- We Design to Fit

No matter why you want or need a breast implant revision procedure, our surgeons will create a personalized and appropriate treatment plan to meet your goals. While these procedures can be complex, our surgeons keep you closely involved throughout each step so you can have peace of mind.

Women who choose to undergo breast implant revision may do so due to the following reasons:

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture is a possible complication associated with breast augmentation. It occurs when scar tissue around the implant hardens, squeezing the implant into an awkward and often uncomfortable position.

Breast Rippling

Rippling or wrinkles at the edges of breast implants can lead to an unnatural appearance. This concern is more commonly associated with saline implants and with slim women with little natural breast tissue surrounding their implants.

Breast Implant Deflation

If a breast implant leaks or ruptures, it can lead to a deflated breast appearance.

Implant Mispositioning

In cases where the breast pocket holding the implant is too large or stretches out, the implant may move out of place. This results in what is known as implant mispositioning.

Double Bubble Deformity

While rare, this complication occurs when the breast implants drop below the natural breast fold, creating the appearance of a bulge beneath the breast.

Dissatisfaction with Breast Size

Some women may be unhappy with the size of their breasts following an initial breast augmentation procedure.

Change of Implant Type

Implant plant exchange can be performed to switch out one type of implant for another. For example, some women who received saline implants may choose to switch to silicone implants.

Implant Removal

Some patients may choose to have their breast implants removed altogether due to health reasons or changes in their aesthetic desires.

Implant Rupture

When an implant is ruptured or becomes otherwise compromised, a breast implant revision is performed to swap out the damaged, existing implant with a new one.

Dr. Sergey Turin is an amazing, highly skilled plastic surgeon who performed reconstruction after a double mastectomy. That journey is a difficult one, but he and his staff made it much easier than I feel it would have been otherwise. I am truly thankful I was sent to him.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will I need to combine my revision with a breast lift?

It is possible for some women to have their implants removed or replaced without breast sagging. Most women, however, experience moderate to severe breast laxity that will need to be corrected with a breast lift procedure. Your surgeon can discuss your surgical options with you during a consultation.

  • Is breast revision painful?

At Defyne, breast implant revision is performed under general anesthesia in order to increase your safety and comfort throughout the surgery. Many patients experience mild pain, swelling, and bruising in the first few days of recovery. However, your surgeon will provide appropriate pain medication to alleviate this discomfort.

  • Will there be scars?

Any surgical procedure that involves the creation of incisions can result in scarring. However, when possible, our surgeons use the incision lines of the original breast augmentation procedure to minimize scarring. If a new incision is needed, the surgeon will make sure that it is as minimal as possible and hidden in areas where it is hardly visible.

  • What is the difference between silicone and saline implants?

Before undergoing breast implant revision, patients will have the choice of silicone or saline implants. While both types of implants can result in natural-looking enhancement, they do have some differences. Saline implants are available to women over the age of 18 and are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. Silicone implants are filled with a silicone gel solution and are available to women over the age of 22. Women who receive silicone implants are encouraged to undergo periodic MRI scan guidelines to make sure that the implant is working correctly.
